Brakes

The first thing I modified was the brakes. There was a noticeable vibration through the steering wheel when braking, due to the disks being warped, which is quite a common problem. So I fitted some new EBC turbo groove disks, and a set of matched high performance street pads, the EBC Green stuff Pads.

After bedding them in carefully for 300miles, they were great! But we will see how long they last after a track day or two.

Update. After about a year of road use and one track day, the disks warped.

Update. New set of Brembo cast brake disks from 3G Brakes and a set of Mintex M1144 pads Update. The Mintex pads came with vinyl shims which didn't last 2 minutes. I removed them, and now the pads squeal and dust a lot. I think after our trials of the new EBC Red Stuff ceramic pads at Croft racing circuit on our track day CRX, I will fit a set of these to the Prelude. It won't be long because the Mintex pads are getting low and I am fed up with the squealing! I will post up some pictures of fitting the new pads so come back here soon.

Update. New EBC Red Stuff Ceramics fitted. Part number DP3872C. These pads came with metal anti-squeal shims which fit great. I also noticed that these pads where chamfered which is probably to reduce risk of squealing. I will wait until they are bedded in properly before pushing them too much. I can see the new patterns they are leaving on the brake disks and they are not fully seated yet, so will have to wait a while longer.

Update Jan 2007. Red Stuff pads were great, but have worn out now, and were very agressive with wear on the discs. I have now opted to try a new range of brake pads from Mintex. These are called "Extreme" pads and are half the price (£35) of red stuff pads(£60+). I can tell you they work very well indeed for the road, good cold bite and seem to be every bit as good as EBC Red Stuff. I have also fitted a new set of brake disks from Brakes International at the same time as the pads. These are their new "sport" range. Basically, they are standard disks but come drilled. They are chamfered holes and only drill into the vents in the disk and not into the casting (which would weaken them). These look really well on the car. Check back later for some pictures.

Update Late 2007 . New front and rear disks from Brakes International. Performance range. Drilled disks both fronts and rears. Also reconditioned brake calipers fitted all round with Goodridge SS brake lines too.
