Exhaust System
Janspeed SS809VT Cat-Back System for UKDM 4th Gen Prelude
After much researching, I finally found an exhaust specialist with years of experience who actually manufacture a system for the UKDM 4th Gen Prelude. The company is Janspeed. They make the infamous scooby sport system for the Impreza, and make several systems for the Lotus Elise and MGF which are very popular. After having a system made by Powerflow for my Honda Accord, I never really liked the sound of the system so wanted to source an exhaust which would sound good straight out of the box! The system for the Prelude is the 809 and for a long time the only thing which put me off from buying, was the fact that it was made from mild steel, and would still eventually rust. Then one day a fellow Honda-R member mentioned that in fact the system could be ordered in stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. So the icing on the cake for me was the price. After ringing around I found the cheapest supplier was Demon Tweeks. They can supply the system for £295 inc vat!!! Now when you compare that with either Honda's own OEM system or any other system I might want to import (DC Sports, HKS) you will see this is a very good deal. Most cat back systems cost in the region of £500-600!!!
Here are the initial pictures of the system. Notice the piping is actually T304 and the silencer is all stamped Janspeed. The most important thing to note is the piping is also mandrel bent, which removes the nasty kinks and pipe narrowing that usually results from the pipe being crush bent. This stands to back up Janspeed's claims of improved power. The system is well constructed and has lots of strengthening support welds and brackets where necessary. I am going to find someone to fit the system for me today if possible. I can't wait to hear the thing sing...
Mugen Sport Exhaust for 5th Gen Prelude. This is "the" design to copy if you were to have one custom made.

SPORTS EXHAUST SYSTEM
Silencing characteristics and
the quest for exhaust efficiency: the two requirements imposed on exhaust
systems have a contrary relationship, and in practice it is extremely difficult
to achieve both. At Mugen, we have continued to employ the straight
configuration, with the design philosophy that low exhaust pressure must be
provided, and that reducing exhaust resistance is an important part of the ideal
exhaust system. The straight configuration is widely used in racing, and is
ideal because, as the name suggests, it provides low exhaust resistance.
However, large silencers are generally required, as there may be problems with
mid to low frequency band silencing and scattering of sound absorbing material
such as glass wool with the straight configuration. Incidentally, the inverted
multi-layer expansion-type silencer widely used by automobile manufacturers
provides stable silencing performance, as the sound passes through several
divided silencer chambers, but involves the disadvantage of some output loss and
is larger and heavier than other silencers. As a result of our quest for the
ideal design for racing engines, Mugen developed the "twin loop-type silencer,"
in which the pipe is twisted into two loops and passes straight through the
silencer twice. This could be considered the ultimate arrangement, combining the
concepts of "absorption" and "intervention" in an ingenious manner. It surpasses
normal systems in power and torque over the full range, and provides the
required silencing and the clear Mugen-Honda sound.
100% bolt using the Mugen "Twin Loop" technology to produce a pleasant exhaust note without usual noise and a big gain in mid range torque and top end horsepower. Beautifully constructed from polished T-304 stainless steel including all flanges and hangers. 4" polished round stainless steel tip.
