Suspension - Koni Sport - Eibach - Neuspeed
These are the TEIN HA's I originally purchased for my Prelude.
After a long time
researching these I eventually decided that the ride would be too hard for
everyday use. I also planned to use our recently purchased Honda CRX for future trackday outings, so
I really didn't want to fit them to my Prelude just for use on the roads. Tein
HA's were recommended for track use only.
So I put them up for sale and sold them. After trawling the forums on the internet I decided on a setup which is popular in the USA, which is to fit Eibach Pro lowering springs matched to Koni Sport adjustable dampers. This combination seemed to come out well in the reviews. So after shopping around for the best deal in the UK, I eventually ordered a set from MotorSportWorld. I had ordered from them before and always got the best prices around. Their customer service is very good too.
Once the kit arrived I arranged to have the springs and dampers fit by Jon of the Honda Revolutions club at Torque Automotive Engineering premises. The install was done in a day but we were unsure as to whether the front Eibach spring perch had been installed the correct way up to achieve the desired lowering at the front. Once I drove home I decided that to get the correct lowering, the spring perches needed turning over. I had watched Jon assemble the front damper units so was confident I could do the work without having to go back down to TAE. The following weekend I changed the fronts, and after assembling them again, the car was lowered correctly.
The ride is surprisingly comfortable, but still firm. Only large holes in the road and very uneven roads surfaces cause problems. I have run for a couple of weeks with the dampers set at full soft all round, so the dampers can be run in. Now I have adjusted the rears a couple of turns to the hard setting. This should help dial out the understeer heavy front wheel drive cars have.
Please get your alignment adjusted after you install springs and dampers. I waited too long and the front tyres got destroyed by bad alignment and too much negative camber. I had an Ingalls front alignment kit fitted by my local Honda dealership when they did the alignment. I now have brand new tyres fitted at the front and tyre wear seems to have been sorted. I have a lot less tramlining. I think this was caused by the excessive negative camber before the Ingalls kit was fitted.
Overall, I like the setup, and would recommend this to other 4th and 5th generation Prelude owners as a good road setup.
I have also purchased recently a Neuspeed front brace
for the Prelude
VTEC. This is offered in gloss black or in a
polished finish. I was able to find an authorised UK dealer for Neuspeed, and
ordered it through them. It took about 2-3 weeks to arrive. This avoided me
having to buy from the states and pay import duty and
tax. Here is a picture of the installed bar. It
is very strong and looks the business.
